The next big marijuana race went mainstream this week when Aurora Cannabis (ACB/ACBFF) was linked with Coca-Cola (KO) as the latest entrant in the CBD-infused beverage race.
The headlines are more than justified too because CBD (especially CBD-infused beverages) are going to be big.
Matt Karnes of Greenwave Advisors told Forbes, “In terms of the CBD market size, I estimate an almost $3 billion market by 2021. Right now there are 15 states that allow CBD only -- this is in addition to the 28 states plus DC that have legalized medical marijuana.”
There’s a big carrot and a lot of companies are going to be chasing it.
In addition to Aurora Cannabis, New Age Beverages (NBEV) and Alkaline Water Company (WTER) have all announced or been closely connected to the CBD-infused beverage boom.
All these companies are targeting an exceptional opportunity. But not all will be winners.
Here’s the Seed Investor’s breakdown of the companies leading the way in the CBD-infused beverage wave:
Aurora Cannabis (ACB/ACBFF)
Aurora’s shares have jumped 29% in two days since it was linked to Coca-Cola (KO) as a provider for a CBD-infused beverage.
One of the largest marijuana companies in the world in partnership with the largest beverage company.
Verdict: Contender

Koios Beverage (KBEV/KBEVF)
Shares have climbed 165% since announcing it plans to launch two CBD-infused beverages.
This tiny stock came out of nowhere since the announcements.
It’s a tiny company with a market value of about $25 million.
Of all the companies who have announced CBD-infused beverage recently, Koios has the smallest revenue and distribution network.
It has a lot of catching up to do in the CBD-infused beverage race against much more established, better funded, and built out competitors.
Verdict: Pretender

New Age Beverages (NBEV)
New Age Beverage shares have jumped 85% since last Friday’s close.
The company has announced its intentions to launch CBD beverages, but the market is still waiting on concrete plan, details, partnerships, or any specifics.
Verdict: On Hold

Alkaline Water Company (WTER)
Alkaline Water has spent the last five years building out multiple production facilities and a distribution network throughout the United States.
Over that time sales have steadily risen from less than $1 million in its first year of operations to more than $20 million last year and is on pace to hit new records this year.
It’s core Alkaline 88 water is the Top 20 of still bottled waters in the country. It’s in 47 of the “Top 75” retail outlets with a total network of 40,000 outlets including Walmart and Kroger.
Alkaline is also headed by Aaron Keay, who founded and raised more than C$150 million for three cannabis companies.
The combination of capacity, distribution, and experience give Alkaline Water a big leg up in the CBD-infused beverage race.
Verdict: Contender
